How the DPI Calculator Works

DPI (dots per inch) is simply your image's pixels divided by the print size in inches. A 4032-pixel-wide photo printed 40 inches wide gives about 100 DPI. But the naive division is misleading whenever the image and the print have different aspect ratios: part of the image gets cropped away to fit, and only the remaining pixels count. This calculator does it properly — it works out the crop first, then calculates the effective DPI from the pixels that actually make it onto the print.

As a rule of thumb, canvas prints look sharp from about 100-150 DPI because the woven texture hides minor softness, while glossy and lustre photo papers want 150-300 DPI. If your effective DPI comes out below the minimum, the calculator shows the largest size the image can safely support and suggests standard sizes that fit your photo better.

What DPI do I need for a canvas print?

100 DPI is a safe minimum for stretched canvas — the textured surface hides minor softness, and canvases are usually viewed from a metre or more away. For large statement pieces viewed from across a room, even 75-80 DPI can look acceptable.

Is 72 DPI good enough for printing?

Usually not for close viewing. 72 DPI shows visible softness on photo paper at arm's length. On canvas, viewed from a distance, it can pass for very large wall art — but if you can choose, aim for 100 DPI or more.

Why is my effective DPI lower than pixels ÷ inches?

Because of cropping. If your photo's aspect ratio (say 4:3) doesn't match the print's (say 2:3), the sides or the top and bottom get trimmed to fit. The trimmed pixels can't contribute to sharpness, so the effective DPI is calculated only from the pixels that remain.

Can I increase the DPI of my photo?

Upscaling software can add pixels, but it cannot add real detail — results vary from decent to artificial-looking. The reliable options are printing at a smaller size, choosing canvas over glossy paper, or going back to the original, uncompressed photo (email and messaging apps often shrink images dramatically).
