What Is a Stretched Edge Canvas Wrap?

A stretched edge wrap (also called a pixel stretch or edge extension) takes the outermost row and column of pixels from your image and stretches them outward to fill the canvas frame depth. This creates a subtle, blurred gradient effect on the sides of the canvas that blends naturally with the main image. It is a popular alternative to mirror wrapping when the image edges contain strong lines or patterns that would look unnatural when reflected.

This free stretched edge generator uploads your photo and produces two production-ready files: a 72 DPI workshop proof showing fold guides, centre ticks, and edge labels, and a full-resolution 300 DPI print file ready for wide-format output. Everything is processed server-side with ImageMagick for pixel-perfect quality at any size.

When to Use Stretch vs Mirror Wrap

Stretch wrapping works best for images with busy edges, text near the border, or strong geometric patterns where a mirror reflection would create visible seams. For portraits and landscapes with soft edges, mirror wrap is usually the better choice. Both options are available free here on CanvasPrep, so you can try each and compare before printing.

Need to process canvas orders in bulk? CanvasPrep automates stretched edge wraps alongside mirror, gallery, colour, and image wraps for any custom size up to 200 inches. Integrate via API or import orders from your Magento, Shopify, or Etsy store.
