Smart DPI Analysis

Calculates effective DPI after accounting for aspect ratio crop — not just naive pixel-to-inch division. This gives you the real print quality.

Crop Warnings

See exactly how much of your image will be cropped to fit the print aspect ratio, and which edges will be trimmed.

Size Suggestions

If your image doesn't fit well, we suggest up to 3 alternative sizes that better match your image's resolution and aspect ratio.

Need automated quality checks at scale?

CanvasPrep runs quality checks on every order automatically — flagging DPI issues, generating comparison proofs, and suggesting alternatives before you print.

Why DPI Matters for Canvas and Photo Printing

DPI (dots per inch) determines how sharp your printed image will look. For canvas prints, a minimum of 100-150 DPI is recommended because the textured canvas surface hides minor softness. Photo prints on glossy or lustre paper need at least 200-300 DPI for crisp results. If your image doesn't have enough pixels for the requested print size, the output will appear blurry or pixelated — and that means reprints, wasted materials, and unhappy customers.

This free image quality checker calculates the effective DPI your image will achieve at the print size you specify. It factors in any cropping needed to match the aspect ratio, which reduces the usable pixels. You get a clear pass/warning/fail verdict, the exact DPI number, crop percentage, and alternative size suggestions where your image would print at higher quality.

How the Quality Check Works

Upload any JPG, PNG, or TIFF image and enter your desired print dimensions. The tool reads the image's pixel dimensions, calculates how much cropping is needed to match the target aspect ratio, and computes the effective DPI after crop. If the DPI falls below the safe threshold, you'll see a warning along with recommended print sizes that would give you a sharper result.

Canvas print businesses can integrate this quality check directly into their order workflow with CanvasPrep. Every incoming order is automatically checked before production begins, and comparison proof images are generated showing the customer their ordered size versus the recommended size — helping resolve quality issues before they reach the press.
